Football 101: A Parent’s Primer
WHAT IS FOOTBALL 101?
Football 101 is an engaging and empowering event designed to welcome Dodgeville Dodger parents—both new and returning—into the exciting world of high school football. The evening provides a fun, informative crash course on the basics of the game, including positions, rules, scoring, and strategy. Beyond just learning football lingo, parents will gain confidence in supporting their athletes on and off the field while building a stronger sense of community with fellow families and coaches. Whether you're stepping onto the field for the first time or looking to deepen your understanding, Football 101 ensures everyone is ready to make this season a successful and memorable one.
2025 Date: July 21st from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at Dodgeville High School
Understanding the Game
In this shared session for all attendees, parents are introduced to the fundamental rules, terminology, and structure of WIAA HS football. Coaches and presenters break down key concepts like downs, scoring, positions, and how a typical game flows from kickoff to final whistle.
Breakout (1A): The Heart behind the helmet
Designed as a fun, welcoming, and empowering experience, this session helps parents better understand the game and their players’ world. Through interactive stations including a helmet and pad demo, a penalty flashcard challenge, and a player-led gear showcase, parents will gain practical insights into football safety, support roles, and sideline presence. It’s part education, part celebration, and a whole lot of team spirit.
Breakout (1B): X’s and O’s Made Simple
This session gives parents a hands-on, strategy-focused look at youth football. Coaches will break down formations and play calls in an easy-to-understand format, followed by on-field demonstrations where parents can step into player positions to walk through a basic play. With a blend of learning, movement, and camaraderie, this session equips parents with tools to better understand the game and be engaged, supportive figures for their athletes.
Closing: THE TEAM!
To wrap up the event, all parents will reconvene for a brief closing which will highlight key takeaways, outline parent volunteer roles, and share the team’s core values of character, commitment, and community. The closing session reinforces the idea that while football is the game, the true victory lies in the supportive network built around each young athlete.
